Our Story

Ubuntu Café and Bakery is owned by Anna and Jana Badenhorst. Both are professionally-trained bakers and baristas, with a collective background and experience in nutrition, chocolate work, and the art and science of making exquisite coffee and tea. We have a passion for good food and use primarily local ingredients.

We strive to reduce our carbon- and environmental footprint by reducing, reusing and recycling whenever possible. Our coffee is locally roasted and sourced through fair trade practices and the beans are organically grown in a sustainable environment.

All the items on our menu are baked in our small commercial kitchen—even the bread we use to make Panini. Only the best ingredients are used: whole grains, real butter and cream, cold-pressed virgin olive oil, farm eggs, real vanilla beans. We avoid the use of trans fats, processed foods, preservatives, stabilizers and additives.

Ubuntu is a South African Nguni (Zulu and Xhosa) philosophy, describing the way Africans approach life. It is how we serve our customers and our community, and  encompasses humanity, compassion and goodness. Ubuntu dictates a spirit of sympathy, kindness and respect towards other people.
